Silver Is the New Gold: Meet the Manitou Dorado Pro Silver Edition
There are rare components. And then there are components you practically have to earn the right to own. The Manitou Dorado Pro Silver Edition belongs firmly in the second category. There are currently only two ways to get one. The first is straightforward, although perhaps not particularly easy: earn your place as an elite downhill athlete with AON Racing and compete at the highest level of World Cup racing. The second? Secure one of the extremely limited NICOLAI R20 MGU AON Edition bikes being produced this fall. That’s it. For everyone else, silver remains something seen beneath the fastest riders in the world.

Dorado means “golden” in Spanish, but this particular fork makes a compelling argument that silver is the new gold. The distinctive silver-legged Dorado was developed for AON Racing’s World Cup program and has become an unmistakable part of the team’s machines. It has already proven that its performance goes considerably deeper than appearances, including carrying Reece Wilson to second place in Elite Men’s competition at the UCI Downhill World Cup in Andorra. Now, for the first time, a very small number will escape the race paddock. The Dorado Pro Silver Edition fitted to the NICOLAI R20 MGU AON Edition combines the alloy chassis with the Pro-level suspension architecture and internals developed for maximum downhill performance. It is a rare intersection between factory racing equipment and something an enthusiast can actually own. More importantly, it is part of a much bigger story.

Developed Where It Matters
The relationship between Manitou, AON Racing, GAMUX and NICOLAI isn’t simply a collection of logos on a race bike. These are companies, engineers, mechanics and athletes that have spent multiple seasons working together, week after week, searching for performance. Components aren’t developed in isolation and simply bolted together afterward. The bike is treated as a complete dynamic system. That philosophy has become particularly visible through the work of GAMUX engineer Pascal Tinner and AON Racing. GAMUX’s experimental approach has included investigating the relationship between directional and torsional stiffness, rider control and traction rather than simply assuming that “stiffer is better.” As Tinner has put it: “If it helps the rider go faster and feel more in control, it’s worth exploring.” That philosophy feels particularly at home at Manitou. The Dorado itself is an example of engineering without convention as a constraint. Its inverted architecture isn’t different for the sake of being different. It exists because Manitou believes there is a better way to create the combination of sensitivity, stiffness, compliance and control required from a downhill fork.

Why Inverted? The Science Behind Smooth
The Dorado’s inverted architecture keeps the bushings and seals consistently lubricated, reducing friction and contributing to the exceptionally smooth, consistent feel that has become the fork’s calling card. But smoothness is only part of the equation. The architecture also provides significantly greater fore-aft stiffness compared with a conventional fork while retaining carefully controlled torsional compliance. Instead of simply chasing maximum stiffness in every direction, Dorado’s chassis is designed to give the rider stiffness where it creates precision while allowing the front wheel to better track rough terrain. Smooth isn’t soft. Compliance isn’t imprecision. Properly engineered, both can become ingredients of control. And underneath those unmistakable silver legs is an equally sophisticated collection of Manitou suspension technology.

Dorado Air + IRT: Sensitivity Without Sacrificing Support
The Dorado Air Spring uses a unique balancing valve to equalize the positive and negative air chambers during inflation. The objective is simple: consistent spring behavior without flat or dead spots in the stroke. The same system also allows travel to be internally configured at 180, 190 or 203 mm without requiring additional parts. Then comes IRT, Infinite Rate Tune. IRT creates an independently adjustable secondary positive air spring that primarily influences the middle and end of the fork’s travel. This allows riders and technicians to run lower pressure in the main chamber for outstanding small-bump sensitivity while independently creating the mid-stroke support and end-stroke progression demanded by World Cup downhill. Rather than forcing a choice between suppleness and support, IRT allows riders to tune both.

TPC+: Control That Changes With the Terrain
On the damping side sits another defining Manitou technology: Sealed TPC+. TPC+ is both velocity and position dependent. When the Dorado is high in its travel and dealing with smaller impacts, damping remains light, allowing the wheel to move freely and follow the ground. Push deeper into the travel and a secondary TPC+ circuit engages, progressively increasing damping force to provide greater support. An independent Hydraulic Bottom Out circuit then adds another layer of control through the final 30 mm of travel, helping manage the largest impacts without compromising sensitivity throughout the rest of the stroke. The sealed cartridge uses a spring-backed Internal Floating Piston to keep damper oil pressurized and combat cavitation during long, demanding downhill runs. That last point matters enormously in racing. It’s one thing for a fork to feel incredible in the parking lot. It’s another for it to deliver that same damping behavior after minutes of relentless, high-speed impacts. Smooth is valuable. Smooth and consistent from the start gate to the finish line is something else entirely.

World Cup Technology, Down to the Details
The smaller details follow the same philosophy. TSR bleed buttons allow excess pressure accumulated inside the outer legs to be released with a simple press, helping preserve the fork’s supple action as elevation, temperature and conditions change. The Dorado platform accommodates both 27.5-inch and 29-inch wheels, while its travel can be internally adjusted between 180, 190 and 203 mm. Riders have independent Air, IRT, rebound, high-speed compression and low-speed compression adjustment. It is a highly adjustable suspension platform, but importantly, all of that adjustment exists to serve one goal: giving the rider control.

From the AON Pits to Your Garage
This is what makes the Dorado Pro Silver Edition more than a special color. It is a physical representation of the development relationship between AON Racing, GAMUX, NICOLAI and Manitou, and of countless World Cup runs, test sessions, engineering discussions and setup changes made in pursuit of fractions of seconds. The standard Dorado is already unusual. This one is genuinely scarce. The NICOLAI R20 MGU AON Edition offers one of the only opportunities outside the AON Racing pits to own the silver-legged Dorado developed around that World Cup program. Production is extremely limited, making the complete bike, and the fork fitted to it, something unlikely to become a familiar sight at the trailhead. So, if you want a Silver Dorado, you have two choices. Become fast enough to earn a place on AON Racing. Or get your name on one of the very few NICOLAI R20 MGU AON Editions being produced. We suspect the second option might be easier. Dorado means gold. This time, silver might be even harder to get.
